Jennie “You probably didn’t know women would do this well”

Jennie Dr. Dre Beats collaboration advertisement released yesterday

“Future was written”

Jenny's rap was featured

A longer version than the part shown in the advertisement is also released.

"Taken for granted, taken as hostage

Carried the baggage, carried the past us

As luck would have it, the future was written

They didn't plan for women to woman up

They didn't plan it but we came out of history like fuck it

They didn't want it but we came out of history like justice"

The lyrics are roughly

“They probably took us for granted, we were taken hostage, we were carrying a burden.

(..)

You probably didn't know that women could do this well

You might not know it, but this is how we wrote history

“You may not have wanted it, but we made history.”

Many people interpret the lyrics as expressing pride in Blackpink's success as a female artist.

There seems to be a lot of interpretation of this as a diss to all those who do not want women to succeed and stand in their way?

THE COMMENTS:
  1. Around 3 seconds into the video, LOL, it's so cute. Looks like Shin Chan's cheeks.
  2. The lyrics are good, and the rap skills are great. I also like how BLACKPINK and YG artists are active individually.
  3. I love this message from a successful woman.

  10. So damn good!!!!!!
  11. Wow, Jennie is the best.
  12. Super cool.
  13. Oh.
  14. Cool.
  15. Jennie is really good at rapping, her tone is awesome. The proactive lyrics are insane.
  16. But haven't there always been many successful female artists? Did BLACKPINK have some narrative I didn't know about?
  17. ☞reply to 16, Just looking at society, it's very understandable. There's no need for a forced narrative. Those successful female artists probably sang more songs with such messages.
  18. ☞ reply to 16, It's not just about BLACKPINK, it's about women in general.
  19. ☞ reply to 16, I think any female artist could say something like that. LOL.
  20. Really cool. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
  21. ☞ reply to 20, Do you not know the pervasive attitude that 'women can't do this' in society?
  22. So cool.
  23. ☞ reply to 17 19, No, I’m asking about the part where it says 'they wouldn’t have thought women would do this well.' Socially, sure, I get that. But the premise of the lyrics assumes that when BLACKPINK debuted, someone thought, 'Because they're women, they won't do well.' I’m questioning if such people existed. It's hard to imagine anyone thinking that when a K-pop girl group debuts. Was there really such a societal reaction?
  24. ☞ reply to 23, It seems like you’re not considering social issues... And even in the K-pop industry, it's only recently that girl groups have built fandoms like boy groups who don’t have to serve in the military. Previously, only a few top girl groups did well, and they were mostly seen as popular with the general public. Their careers were shorter too. It wasn't common for girl groups to make as much money and be as successful as BLACKPINK. Their success has shown that it's possible for girl groups to achieve this level of success.
  25. Love it!!!!
  26. Love the rap tone.
  27. Jennie's rap tone is seriously amazing.
  28. I hope more successful women share messages like this.
  29. Super cool.
  30. Cool.
  31. Jennie is awesome.
  32. Oh, the lyrics are cool. I wonder who wrote them.
  33. Oh, cool.
  34. Just look at top artists like Taylor Swift. She has lyrics like, 'If I were a man, I would have reached this point faster.' Those in the field must feel this way.
  35. There are not many female groups or solo female artists singing about women's issues. Regardless of individual success, there's an underlying attitude of 'because they're women.' Anyway, BLACKPINK’s success as women is significant.
  36. Love you, Jennie. ๐Ÿ˜ญ
